Support for Families of Patients
One topic that consistently pops up is the effect mental illness, self medicating and suicide has on family members. I have talked at times about the challenges of being George’s mom and the ups and downs, mixed emotions and guilt. Hindsight is always cruel as you ponder what you may have done differently and imagine the outcome as a positive situation. It is a fool’s game. Acceptance of the present situation is the way to go.
Chelsea and I have spoken often about the lack of support or information for siblings who have lost someone to mental illness. For a parent, losing a child is the worst thing that can happen, however there are books, articles and support groups. For siblings you will be hard pressed to find anything. When we lost George, Chelsea found 1 article online that was helpful, but definitely not enough.
We would like to open a dialogue and perhaps begin a Facebook group for siblings and other family members to chat, support each other and share experiences.
